Fillerbunny (genetically engineered)

Aw. Can you believe this lovely little thing?

Fillerbunny is a small, pink cartoon rabbit. You know the kind with giant eyes, huge buck teeth, and head that is bigger than its body. His entire purpose in life is to be cute and entertain the reader with his exploits. Unlike Jhonen's other page filler Happy Noodle Boy, Fillerbunny tries to make the reader smile in between convulsions from the numerous injections he receives, and the occasional begging to have someone kill him.

I love it.

Goddamit!

A Rubik's Cube can have (8! × 38−1) × (12! × 212−1)/2 = 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 different positions (~4.3 × 1019), about 43 quintillion, but it is advertised only as having "billions" of positions, due to the general incomprehensibility of that number. Despite the vast number of positions, all cubes can be solved in 29 moves or fewer.

Ok. I can´t f*cking solve it. I´m way getting into the obsession phase...

Sh*t. Must... do it...

The little black box...

¿What will it be, the little thing next to the big screen from where the kids of 2008? 2010? 2015? can control everything -movies music data- on the living room?

Will it be ubicuous?
Will it be a monopoly?
Will it came from the computer industry, or the CE, or the cable companies?
Will it be cool? It has to.

Will it let me burn Plan 9 into a DVD no matter the format it is in on the hard drive?

Have I said already how much I hate ants?????

August 02, 2005

Is it true?

"The best thing for being sad... is to learn something. That is the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds.

"There is only one thing for it then--to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting..."

-T.H. White, The Once and Future King

*BTW. I have been reading and reading science blogs all night (don´t ask) and happen to notice that I found not a single one in spanish, at least not in the subject I was following the thread of on blogsnow, wich is the new stupid "idea" of Bu$h to teach ID in schools. Usually, when I follow threads on any tech story, I find at least three or four blogs on spanish, but none this time. Too bad, I guess.

Then I realized I was writing this in english. And switched.

ENTONCES...

The 16 mm shrine (loserdom!)

OMG. ¿The next Filthy Critic?

Ash Karreau hate films, and soon you will too.

Visit his blog here. ;*)

Some gems, and I quote:

The best performance of the picture comes from Karen Black, but this may be because pretty much everyone else in the film is awful, and she shines in comparison, kind of like watching amateur porn on the internet and fixating on the one girl who’s an amateur by choice, not by virtue of bad skin and a thyroid condition.

Written by Roald Dahl, the novel is one of a series of children’s stories that seem appropriate for kids at first but clearly exhibits the kind of violent creepiness most often seen inChristopher Walken films and John Wayne Gacy’s paintings of clowns .

Actually, he’s not even that popular, it’s just that he’s infiltrated into the ranks of cult directors worshipped by snotty video store clerks hoping their nerdy taste will somehow elevate them to Quentin Tarantino status in the eyes of the attractive waitresses from the all-night coffee shop next door.

...sort of like a Tarantino movie but without the occasional amoral bloodbath to liven things up

Aw! Sweet bitterness. I´m his fan.

July 30, 2005

And I stop to complain...

Stayed up too late. Too much alcohol in my system. I open my eyes. I´m alone. Grab something to eat. Grab something to read. I feel retro. I will have the first encyclopedia in the second row, thank you. They´re all red and shiny. I think nobody ever has even opened this one. "Language and..." Oh. Interesting. Semiotic.

(double? that´s so... 70´s)

But they caught me... I keep on reading.

Meh. I like neologisms.

I can´t stand, though, some words people use daily this days. Some people. Most. "chilo", for example. What is up with that word? They use it for everything.

Then, some others that are more inherent to the social environment, I guess. Like "pistear", or "chingo", or "fregazo", or "cochis" -es que yo elegiría automáticamente la palabra cerdo-.

Does that make me a liguistic snob?

And.

I dont know what to think of the people that always answer with the same strings of words: "Ya ves". "A poco si". "Pues que bien, no?". ETC (you know what I mean)

I mean. (in case you dont know hehe) Are those SUSTITUTES of ideas? Like, I dont really know what to say or the fuck I dont understand a single word of what she is saying so they just reply with those same standard safety nets for their ignorance?

Or they just think is not worth it to say more than three words?

On the other hand, there is the people that goes on and on talking nonsense. Who am I to judge anybody right?

BTW. Hendrix rules.

Viaje al Centro de la Tierra

Oh. And this (First measurements of Earth's core radioactivity) out just the day I started reading the novel of J.V.

Believe it or not, I haven´t read that one. I know. I know. You´re supposed to read this one when you´re 12 or something. But my readings have been rather chaotic. Nietzche, Goethe, Novalis, Cervantes at 8. Verne (second one), Feynman, Jenilek, Hesse (I lost the count one) at 29.

What? I´m in chapter 19. As a matter of fact, the only book I have read from J.V is Around the World in 80 days. Actually one of my favorites. Ever. Makes me smile just to remember some lines.

Yeah I´m the uncoolest person you´ll ever meet.

Look, we are cool!

Ok, so the new Windows Vista (eeew, just to write that makes me vomit) beta is out now.

They said august 3, but releasing it today a few days (three) before makes them look cooler, I guess. Look, we have it ready before we said!!!

Ahem. Not delayed for three years, right???? people is stupid, right? *cough*

Of course, it has nothing to do with the investors meeting tomorrow, right?

Plus, no more mr. nice windows updates -aka patches for our crappy software- for you people, not without us peeking into your machine at least, oh well, only the security ones, that´s right, we are that generous....

Ugh.

Ok. So they are installing cameras. Webcameras? To see what´re they doing (they, the damned asholes who seat there for a couple of hours -you know, they need their nap-, go to the best restaurants and drive suburbans with our money).

I say, they should better set up this equipment in the monkey cages at the local zoo.

They do basically the same anyway. At least we can have a little respect for the monkeys.

Ask to me about the Hesse novel I´m reading... Or, what is the last thing I´m trying to understand about the man -in a philosophical sense, of course-. Tell you what, you can even ask me about the last gadgets, or the trends in technology. I even care more about the leaves the wind is playing with... Or sexuality, you can ask me about that. I´m open to all subjects known to men!

But the real world, as in, you know, well, like this one thing?

Forget it.

Oh yes, I´m making a documentary on it. What?!

Random (Waiting in my desk)

Hmmmm. Yummy.

Biotech (uh oh)

Why in the world did I selected biotechnology as the subject of my next article, only God knows, but the fact is I did, and now I´m hooked up with it. It is, indeed, fascinating. As I kept reading I was full of mental Oh´s and Ah´s. Even some Oh Wow´s. So... Better share the love, right?

First, I came across this article on a new Institute for Genomic Medicine open in Texas.

Lexicon is a pioneer in gene trapping technology and will use $35 million of the grant to make two copies of its knockout mouse embryonic stem cell library that will contain 350,000 cell lines. A knockout mouse is a mouse with a gene that is "turned off" so scientists can find out the function of each gene.

Yeah.

Then, the article "More time needed for biotechnology debate"...

Pre-implantation diagnosis should not be allowed. Pre-natal testing should be allowed if there is a possibility of the parents passing on a genetic disease to their children. Polar-body biopsy should be allowed only in the case of a serious illness. Human cloning should be prohibited on all counts, even for therapeutic purposes.

Oh...

And then the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, with its Biotech 101 Guide and the reference to the Biotechnology Industry Organization at Bio.org. (Nice set of milestones 2005 here, btw)

The original intention of the article is a question. Are we culturally ready?

Weell. Are we?

Telepatía

Hm. I was truly sad last night. So sad, that the rescue gang came to my aid and virtually dragged me out of the house into a club (what an eww club btw).

I had have no food in the whole day, and there I was, sitting in a bed (yes, a bed) watching stupid people performing "their moves" and trying to get something not too bad for my poor organism at the bar.

Well I finally survived the night, but the post is not about it, the post is about... The lecture! Yeah. There was this girl in the car with us, boy she was nasty, a friend of the girlfriend of my youngest brother, and she kept talking and talking about her new cellphone and that it had "blutut", so I say, if you can tell me what Bluetooth is, I´ll buy you a beer.

So she starts her lecture... "It is like to connect, to make phones work like... Like telepaty, you know???"

Ohhhh The enlightment!!!!!! I almost cry of laughing.

biocomputation (or... life from scratch)

Normally, new life is created via reproduction, with each generation passing its genes on to the next. But Dr. Venter aims to bypass that process by manufacturing a complete set of genes, or genome, of a single-cell bacterium in his laboratory.
The guys of Edge on biocomputation. Interesting, as always.

I was so ready to hit it. Like, 1 mt away from the place where it actually hitted me. Was I wrong placed? Was the ball a mistake? MSN Search Local Beta

They are catching up with A9, Yahoo and Google blah blah blah

What is really interesting is the integration with Virtual Earth (actually they shoud call it virtual US, since it only works for this country)

Steve Lombardi says they have big plans for other countries, though. Wow. Virtual Earth has been developed for around 10 years.

"I think we should close be finding your house",
that´s what Lombardi says to the camera guy at the video in channel 9. (I watched it all. Yeah I have no life. Wait. This kind of stuff is my life. Oh no! I love my work! YEAH AND IT HELPS ME TO FORGET HOW SICK MY FAMILY MAKES ME FEEL SOMETIMES)

So, this is what Microsoft does best. They buy cool companies, and then put their sticky hands in them, usually making them uncool. I hope they dont ruin this one.

Hmmm. Does this satellite maps with ULTRA zoom features mean I can make "virtual" shooting of random people??? I mean, look at them! The people look like cute little targets!

404 error report

The requested document is not on this server.
I even tried matching your request
with all the re-mapped pages I know about.
but nothing helped.
I'm really depressed about this.
You see, I'm a really good web server...
but here I am, brain the size of the universe,
trying to serve you a simple web page,
and it doesn't even exist!
Where does that leave me?!
I mean, I don't even know you.
How should I know what you wanted from me?
You honestly think I can *guess*,
what someone I don't even *know*,
wants to find here?
*sigh*
Man, I'm so depressed I could just cry.
And then where would we be, I ask you?
It's not pretty when a web server cries.
And where do you get off telling me what to show anyway?
Just because I'm a web server,
and possibly a manic depressive one at that?
Why does that give you the right to tell me what to do?
Huh?
I'm so depressed...
I think I'll crawl off into the trash can and decompose.
I mean, I'm gonna be obsolete in what, two weeks anyway?
What kind of a life is that?
Two effing weeks,
and then I'll be replaced by a .01 release,
that thinks it's God's gift to web servers,
just because it doesn't have some tiddly little
security hole with its HTTP POST implementation,
or something.
I'm really sorry to burden you with all this,
I mean, it's not your job to listen to my problems,
and I guess it is my job to go and fetch web pages for you.
But I couldn't get this one.
I'm so sorry.
Believe me!
Maybe I could interest you in another page?
There are a lot out there that are pretty neat, they say,
with lots of pretty naked web servers on them,
although none of them were put on *my* server, of course.
Figures, huh?
Everything here is just mind-numbingly stupid.
That makes me depressed too, since I have to serve them,
all day and all night long.
Two weeks of information overload,
and then *pffftt*, consigned to the trash.
What kind of a life is that?
Now, please let me sulk alone.
I'm so depressed.

*Found it while looking for a clay illustration tutorial.

Bloqueo (the show must go on)

No quiero.

No big deal. Just the average melacholic post of fridays at 19:30.

I am that predictable.

Hoy me he quedado muda.

Another sunday (awaiting one summer rain)

Otro dolor en el pecho, otra pregunta, otra respuesta, otra tempestad, otro nubarrón, otra mentira, otra verdad, otra llamada, otra existencia miserable, otro beso muerto, otro afecto, otro eco de dulzura, otro reconocimiento, otro pesar, otro sol, otra nube, otro cielo, otro sabor en mi boca, otra resignación, otra lucha, otro paso, otro sueño, otra manera de extrañarte, otro suicidio moral, otra ausencia, otro razonamiento, otra locura, otro latido, otro suspiro, otra respiración entrecortada, otro silencio, otra muerte, otra vida, otra laguna, otras 24 horas sin tí, otra vuelta del reloj, otro día, otra fábula, otra hoja en blanco, otro vacío.

MacOS X secret double life...

694, originally uploaded by Taly@.

Still trying to figure it all out. But check the cute poll at Joy of Tech.

Also, the five stages of Intel Macs. (Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance?). Poll results here.

And um... Maybe you can take a little revenge on Jobs.

Ah. Ya me acorde. Era German Dehesa. Y en nadamenos que la revista Quién. Sue me.

Most harmful books? O.ô

Now I must read them all.

Thank you guys for giving me a new reading list.

What now? Are you burning them?

Of all of them, I have only read "The Second Sex", a book them seem to consider like the beginning of the feminist movement. Well all I read in that book was truths, truths and more truths, specially coming from where I come, a small town in the sonora desert. (The Capital, dad took it away from my hands at 15 saying it would be bad for me. I had it almost finished, though, I missed one or two pages, maybe. Heh. I had to read it at the light of a small little lamp next to my bed because lights were not allowed after past 9:30 pm or so... SO I managed >:*) Imagine the nightmare of going to bed at that hour for a nocturne being like me)

Harmful?

UGH.

The only one I´m more than ambivalent of is Mein Kampf, I mean, of reading it.

But yes, I would probably read it if I had it.

And no, I´m not feminist.

Just get out of town and forever be free
Forever, I wonder we could stay together
It could change if you want for the better
Just turn down my shirt and lay down next to me*

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Post recovered Post

Eran tan rojas y dulces. Y nadie sabía quien era a ciencia cierta y el amor era siempre trágico.

Miren que casualidad.

Break me a fucking give.

Yet another bad review of SW III.

Hey, what do you have against Yoda. And C3PO is not gay!

Jeez. As I said, I liked it. But I´m a fan. Sort of. Oh well...

Okami (E3 2005 trailer)

Okami is considered by some the best game released at E3.

From the Viewtiful Joe team, Okami is heavily inspired by Japanese calligraphy and watercolor. You play the sun god Amaterasu reincarnated as a wolf, sent to defeat an evil monster and restore color back to the world. The art direction is beautiful, but the innovation is in the gameplay.
The trailer is here.

Beautiful, and original, indeed. You can see some screens here.

Aw Cohen...

Have you guys had a peek at the new BitTorrent Search site?

I know I´m supposed to be ambivalent about it. But I´m not.

Oh, C´mon.

I´m listening to one from Swan right now, y que bueno, porque solo algo así podría haber escuchado hoy.

One of this days...

¿Dónde, pues? Aquí. (Browse bands with MP3/Ogg versions) or Live... Or more recently added... Whatever.

(software you need to listen).

Highest quality, from trade friendly artists only.

All right. Back to my own private hell. At least I have good music. >:*/

In the beggining, it was the command line...

And all the BBS fun. Whee I want this documentary. It turns out it is from 2004. How come I didnt knew about it!!!

Why we lie? And why are we so good at it?

The answer according with Scientific American.

"The obvious question raised by all of this accounting is: Why do we lie so readily? The answer: because it works. The Homo sapiens who are best able to lie have an edge over their counterparts in a relentless struggle for the reproductive success that drives the engine of evolution. As humans, we must fit into a close-knit social system to succeed, yet our primary aim is still to look out for ourselves above all others. Lying helps. And lying to ourselves--a talent built into our brains--helps us accept our fraudulent behavior."

No sé... They do. They do. No sólo los animales, las plantas también. NATURE FAVORS DECEPTION BECAUSE IT PROVIDES SURVIVAL ADVANTAGES. See?

The worst: Fake tears, fake orgasms and porn flashy "have a nice day smiles". Oh, and to lie by omission. And lie to yourself, of course. That should be the worst. I have a theory that the people who is good to tell lies to others lies to theirselves so well that they dont even realize that they are doing it. They believe their own lies.

What about make-up and Wonder-bras? Who must be frustrating find out the wonderful C sized breasts fade into an A. Not that A´s ar bad at all... >;*)

I always say it. Everybody lies all the time. I remember a date once who looked at me like if I were the ultimate sinner by saying that. Oh, I said, shut up, it is true, and if you say you have never said a lie, you´re lying. He said nothing. No second date, of course hahaha I think I was 18 or something like that. I say, beware of those who say I dont lie, or are scared of this affirmation, I´m sure they are the worst hopeless liars.

Well, enough crap for a wed.

Singularity! (A tough guide)

"Personally, I don't intend to TRanscend; I'm going to get into UpLoading then make myself into a 21st level half-elven barbarian hero with a +4 sword of bloodshedding and I'm going to go adventuring in World of Warcraft 21.499! Rooarr! (Or maybe I'll just grow up to be like Greg Egan and do math.)"

Nice site. Filed under technocore_AI, so, you have been warned. >:*)

The Ultimate Sexual Predators.

VORACIOUS female spiders just cannot help trying to eat suitors before sex. Why? It's their aggressive personalities.

Females of several spider and mantis species dine on their partners, but only after acquiring the sperm necessary to fertilise their eggs. By providing his mate with a good meal, the male increases his own reproductive success. But that doesn't explain the behaviour of females that opt for dinner instead of sex, as fishing spiders (Dolomedes triton) often do. "Eating your mate during or after copulating, that's no big deal. Eating your mate beforehand, that's weird," says Chadwick Johnson at the University of Toronto, Canada.

Even aggressive females do get to mate if their suitors escape their fangs. But Johnson and Andrew Sih at the University of California, Davis, think the behaviour is part of a "voracity syndrome". They watched 60 female fishing spiders when males approached, and in encounters with predators and prey.

Femmes fatales who made the most attacks on males also showed the most frenzied feeding, and were most daring against predators. This, says Johnson, suggests these traits are linked, akin to human personalities.

Monday comic er... Story (Whatever)

Nobody came to my winter solstice party.

Actually, the whole Leisure Town site is awesome.

Tres sonrisas, hoy. La primera se la debo a Cortázar (Rayuela, capítulo 34, pág 217), la segunda a un boleto de la línea de autobuses "Estrella Blanca" que encontré entre sus páginas (happiest day of my life so far) y la tercera a un e-mail SMS en mi Inbox.

Fade to black (23:18)

Hoy te extraño y huele a lluvia.
Huele a primavera, a hiedra.
Huele a musgo, néctar, savia.
Huele a tí.

Huele a amanecer, a luna.
Huele a cielo, nube, vena.
Huele a volcan apagado.
Huele a mí.

He de respirar. He de seguir viviendo. ¿Por qué sigo latiendo? Espejismos. Tinieblas. Me he perdido. Y he de seguir. He de dar otro paso. Vacilante. Abismos. Desfiladeros. Viento. Frío. Dolor. Y he de seguir.

Napoleon Dynamite Numa Numa Dance.

Oh, give me a break.

Slightly, that is.

Ok. Best custome for a female to perform this dance? Hahaha!

Ego Post (only mom would read it)

A veces dolorosa.

Whoops. I feel so embarrased. Anyway. Must remember the front cover of today will do as the banana holder tomorrow, the front cover of today will do as the banana holder tomorrow...

I´m such a an idiot! :*)

Luke Chueh (and another question)

See the LC gallery here.

Now the question.

Me preguntaron. Pues no, no me gustó. Pero es honesto. Caras largas.

No? Dammit!

Un long dimanche de fiançailles

The "new" movie of Jean Pierre Jeunet. I saw it almost by an accident, as I was supposed to see Kinsley. But that is why I love accidents. Called "Amor eterno" in spanish, I woldn´t even look at it if it is not because I´m told Audrey Tautu is starring. And then I see the name of the director. JPJ. I LOVE JPJ. And I didnt even knew this movie was his. So, there. A beautiful movie. What is most funny is that just days ago I finally saw "City of lost children", his work after-Delicatessen-before-Amelie.

What can I say. Brilliant. The trailer is here.
